How Do They Work?

JUVÉDERM and JUVÉDERM VOLUMA XC are both FDA-approved smooth gel dermal fillers which use the same active ingredient, a substance called hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is found naturally in the human body and binds to water to add volume and softness. Over time, however, the amount of hyaluronic acid in our skin decreases, contributing in part to sagging and wrinkles. In effect, fillers put back what time has taken away.

While their makeup is similar, there are variations between these fillers that enable them to treat a larger variety of aesthetic concerns. For example, JUVEDERM VOLUMA XC is the only filler approved by the FDA specifically for adding volume to the cheeks for a lifted, more youthful-looking profile. Other indications for these products include:

• Adding volume at the temples, beneath the eyes, and other depressed areas
• Filling in nasolabial folds, the lines that run from the nose to the corners of the mouth
• Adding volume to or improving the shape of lips
• Reducing horizontal forehead lines
• Minimizing vertical lip lines

Because hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance, there’s very little risk of experiencing an adverse reaction or allergy after your treatment with these fillers. What Can I Expect?

Your treatment with dermal fillers is typically a quick appointment that doesn’t exceed 30 minutes. During your appointment, one of our board-certified dermatologists first numbs the area with topical lidocaine or ice before cleansing the skin. He or she then makes a series of small injections, which produce a slight pinch. Immediately after your injections, your doctor may offer you a cold compress to help minimize swelling.

Side effects are typically minimal and limited to reactions at the injection sites. These include redness, bruising, swelling, and irritation. Discoloration can be easily covered with makeup, and most of these effects should resolve themselves within a few days.
